BEACH HOUSE, RUBY BAY

This house sits on a flat strip of coast at the base of the Ruby Bay Bluffs with an easterly aspect looking across Tasman Bay to D'Urville IsIand. The owners asked for a simple house with major emphasis on outdoor living, minimum impact when viewed from the coast and maximum advantage of the view. Visitors and cars arrive at the south end of this long house and are taken up the garden path to the front door. Entering under a low roof the living areas open up under the large tent like roof that extends beyond the interior to provide cover for outdoor living areas.

This large north facing gable allows winter sun to penetrate deep into the living area while clerestories in the Sitting Room let in late winter sun. All living areas and bedrooms face east while the bathrooms are on the cliff side connected to each other via the enclosed garden. The laundry/porch that links the 2 parts of the house is open to the beach side for easy access and then into the bathroom garden. The outdoor areas flow easily around, there always being somewhere out of the breeze to sit in the sun.
