NELSON ORTHODONTIST

Harley House is a Category 1 registered building dating from 1869 and is the subject of a Historic Places Trust heritage covenant. The original house was designed by John Scott in 1868 for Mr Harley who was at one time Mayor of Nelson The Owners wanted a new double garage and a dental consulting room on the property.

After discussions with NZ Historic Places Trust it was decided to build a new freestanding building designed to complement the house but not to replicate. It incorporates a single story steeply pitched roof that matches the house. The entry gable to the surgery and that of the old scullery of the house link the two buildings visually. Different materials have been used - corrugated colorsteel roofing and wall cladding with timber windows - while the same colour scheme unifies the complex. The smaller scale of the new building provides a balance to the stately home beside it when viewed from the road.
